NOTE: Although Messmer's Renewer is an excellent maintenance cleaner for oiled or coated wood, to clean your deck prior to oiling/staining it or for cleaning bare wood we recommend "Ultimate Deck Cleaner with Mildewcide - Step 1" followed by "Ultimate Citric Brightener - Step 2". This two-step approach provides a much more potent restoration which will lead to a much better oiling result. If unwanted particles are not fully removed from the deck before oiling, the stain may draw these particles down into the wood and bind them there permanently. In addition to permanently ruining the appearance of your deck, these drawn-down particles provide food for damaging organisms to move deeper into your wood. As well, the Ultimate 2-step cleaning solution is able to remove any of the existing oil/coating that is not fully intact, and will open up the pours of the wood so that they accept more deck oil/stain and therefore the reapplication of oil/stain will last longer.
